INDUSTRY UPDATE
Will .us Go Commercial?
Bidding for management of the .us ccTLD closed on July 27, 2001. The United States government wants the .us domain management to be decentralized and is selecting a non-profit corporation to help guide the little-used domain name suffix. The manager will be held accountable to the government to ensure that the domain space is not misused. Currently, the .us domain space is used primarily for public institutions but new management could open the domain to commercial entities. Organizations that already utilize the .us domain will be allowed to continue doing so, but private organizations could be thrown into the mix. While the new manager has not yet been selected, an appointment is expected before the current contract expires in early November 2001.

September Meeting in Montevideo
ICANN's next round of meetings will be held September 7-10, 2001 in Montevideo, Uruguay. The topics include internationalized domain names, register transfer issues, the At Large Study Committee Report, and other TLD issues. ICANN President/CEO Discusses the Internet and new TLDs
M. Stuart Lynn, the President and CEO of ICANN, was in Washington, D.C. August 15-17, 2001 to discuss the new TLDs and fate of the Internet. Regarding Internet space, Lynn stated that most users will not see a dramatic change in the way they use the Internet in day-to-day life and users will have more options. Gradually expanding the root system to include a more TLDs will ensure that space is available, but this may also create legal chaos by igniting a legal firestorm around trademark issues. This has been evident with the release of the new .biz and .info TLDs. Legal questions have arisen about the process and the actual trademark documentation itself. Without a firm established method of release for these names they will continue to lead to disappointment, aggravation and legal turmoil.

ICANN Approves Plans for .name Domains
Joining the ranks of .com, .net and the other TLDs, on August 1, 2001, ICANN announced that plans are in place to offer Internet addresses in .name. Individuals will be able to start reserving their personal name in late August and are expected to be functional around November 1st. With thousands of individuals with the same or similar names, the registration process will be the same as the .info and .biz. Individuals will purchase applications and will receive their new domain based on a random selection process.

ICANN Can't Predict When .pro Contract Will be Signed
There are still a significant number of terms that need to be addressed before the .pro TLD registry contract is signed. ICANN selected RegistryPro Ltd. To operate .pro and the new TLD will be reserved exclusively for doctors, lawyers, accountants, and other licensed professionals.
