ICANN UPDATE
ISOC Will Likely Operate the .ORG Registry
The Reston-based Internet Society will likely win the contract to operate the global ".org" Internet domain, the online home to many nonprofit groups. If successful in its bid, the Internet Society, or ISOC, would take over management of the Internet's fifth-largest domain in December under a recommendation made by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN operates the Internet's global domain-name system.

VeriSign Violates ICANN Accreditation Agreement
VeriSign has been charged with 17 incidences of inaccurate or incomplete WHOIS data in the last 18 months. According to the ICANN registrar accreditation agreement, top-level domain registrars must ensure that public information in the WHOIS records is accurate. Although VeriSign has been repeatedly asked to correct several records with inaccurate or incomplete WHOIS data, the registrar has failed to do so. This constitutes a breach of the accreditation agreement and ICANN has formally notified VeriSign that it has 15 days to correct the WHOIS data, or it could potentially lose the ability to act as an accredited registrar of .com domains. .AERO Allows Civil Aviation on the Net to Take Off
As of September 2, 2002, .aero has been launched as a new top-level domain. The domain registry has strict policies in place to make .aero names only available to true members of the aviation community. Companies such as airlines, aerospace engineering firms, aircraft manufacturers, and aerospace parts suppliers can take advantage of this domain. In addition, aviation clubs, airports, small aviation businesses, freight operations, and individual pilots are among the qualified registrants of the .aero domain. Regulatory and government associations will also be found on the .aero registry.

Wanted: Organization to Run .EU
As part of the European Union's attempts to create a .eu domain, the European Commission has requested that any organization interested in running the .eu domain express its interest by Oct. 25, 2002. The .eu domain would be a top-level domain available to member states of the European Union. Both commercial and private users would be able to secure .eu domains. The European Union mandates that interested organizations must qualify as non-profit under the incorporation laws of one of the member states.
